BC Engineering and Manufacturing COVID19 Response (BCEMCR)
Summary of COVID19 Related hardware industry efforts in BC
Version 1.0, last updated 3/22/2020
Based on OSCMS document
COVID19 is currently spreading rapidly and the rate of new cases per day is accelerating globally. Italy, where thousands of people are dying, serves as a “this could happen to us” case study. One of the biggest problems they have had, despite having one of the highest rated health care systems in the world, is that they ran out of PPE and ventilators as well as other medical supplies and devices. Like Italy, our medical professionals are at severe risk while treating these highly infectious patients, and have an order of magnitude higher mortality rate than the patients themselves as a result. Treatment and care looks like oxygen therapy or intubation for weeks in highly-specialized ICUs.
If infections proceed at their current pace across the globe, we will not have enough medical supplies to prevent the higher mortality rates (8+%) Italy is seeing as of 3/17/2020. Our goal is to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 via assisting with manufacturing of Protective Personal Equipment as well as whatever treatment and diagnostic equipment is needed. This group will help to serve as a primary point of contact for the British Columbian Hardware Engineering and Manufacturing community to communicate with global efforts, our Canadian and US counterparts, the Canadian Government, local hospitals, and Tier 1 medical device manufacturers.
Please refer to the OSCMS for the latest. This should be considered to be required reading to be part of this group.
